Barton FAQ

Q: What age of student is Barton appropriate for?

A: Barton can be used with children, teenagers, and adults, and can be appropriate for students as young as five.

Q: My child struggles with reading and spelling, but does not have a dyslexia diagnosis. Does that mean we cannot use Barton?

A: Barton is appropriate for children with dyslexia and other learning disabilities, but a formal diagnosis is not required.

Q: How do I know if Barton is appropriate for my child’s learning needs?

A: Before tutoring can begin, students must take a screening to determine whether the Barton system will be a good fit. If they cannot pass the screening, Barton is not the correct system for them at this time.

Q: How much tutoring does my child need?

A: In order to make meaningful progress, students must attend a minimum of two hours of tutoring per week.

Q: My child already has received some reading instruction. Can we start with a later level?

A: Every student starts with level 1. If a child has already received instruction in another Orton Gillingham program, it may be appropriate to start with a later level.
